According to the Collie Club of America, "Not only are they beautiful, but they are intelligent, friendly, loyal, loving and sensitive. They are real family dogs and are noted for being very people friendly. Likewise they are easy to train. In addition to being very clean dogs, they are one of the easiest to housebreak. Typically the collie is not a one man dog. If raised properly and treated with respect, they make an ideal pet for the entire family."

We have been told several interesting personal stories about collies saving the lives of children. Recently, we read about a collie saving an elderly couple when their home was on fire. She came and woke them up. Stories have abounded for years about the collie. For example...one collie travelled 2000 miles to find his family after he became lost. Collies have received the

Ken-L-Ration Hero Dog award 5 times.

The collie will do okay in an apartment as long as he/she is exercised on a regular basis. Collies are relatively inactive indoors and do best with an average size yard. Collies are somewhat sensitive to the heat. Provide plenty of shade in warm weather.

The collie is a generally healthy dog with a life expectancy of 14-16 years.

According to the Collie Club of America, "A common misconception is that the Collie needs daily brushing or frequent bathing." They recommend that Rough Collies, (like Lassie) be brushed once a week or every two weeks when they are in full coat. The Groomax Rake, (Petsmart) works well for our adult collies. Spayed females and males shed once a year.

We usually sell our collie puppies with Limited AKC registration (although we have sold several puppies with full AKC registration). We do this by checking the limited box on the dog's registration application. Buyers receive the AKC registration paperwork when they receive their puppy. Limited registration means that a dog is AKC registered but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for future AKC registration. Limited registation certificates are white with an orange border.

Male collies are from

24 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 60-75 pounds.

Females are 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder and weigh from 50-65 pounds. (More info. on the collie breed standard can be found at akc.org.)
