Collie is the Celtic word for 'useful'. In the 18th century, the collie's natural home was in the highlands of Scotland. They were sheepdogs who were bred with great care in order to assist their masters in the guarding of the flock.
Our goal at Mountain Collies is to breed collies that have the gentle shepherding qualities that families enjoy. We strive for health, intelligence, and beauty. By taking great care we believe our collies have obtained these standards.
When purchasing a collie with AKC papers you can ask the breeders if they are in-breeding...which is also known as line-breeding. Line breeding is inbreeding, but to a lesser degree. They should have this information from the pedigree that belongs with an AKC dog. If someone does not have a pedigree for their dog and they are breeding...the chance is high that in-breeding or line-breeding is taking place.
We all want healthy pets to love and that is why we here at Colorado Mountain Collies have made a conscious effort to breed our collies responsibly.
AKC sets high standards for it's members by requiring DNA testing, and periodic random inspections..

Once you register a puppy with AKC you receive a free sixty day trial with the AKC pet health care plan...which covers accidental injury from days 1-60 as well as sickness from days 31-60.
Our collies are typically very gentle with our young children. We have a cat and Mountain Lance will even share his food with her. However...our collies do get territorial with the occasional bear that roams our area.
